Silver Sunday Sojourn #08 - Home...for now

Silver Sunday Sojourn #8

Hello from Wild and Windy Scotland!

Scotland, like much of the UK, is being battered by strong winds and rain. Trees are down, leaves are making roads and paths slippery, and grey clouds are scudding across the sky. It’s the sort of weather that makes me want to stay indoors and write about sunnier places.

THIS WEEK'S SOJOURN

Looking forward to 2027…

Even though we still have a couple of months left of 2026, my thoughts are already turning to what travel might bring in 2027.

Since 2018, I’ve attended World Travel Market (WTM) in London, where I meet tourism boards, travel representatives and PRs, and generally talk about travel from morning to evening.

I always enjoy hearing about new destinations and places to stay, and this year is no different. I already have some interesting meetings arranged, though the final week before WTM is usually when the diary really starts to fill up.

From My Bookshelf: The Snows of Kilimanjaro

Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro may not have been the most cheerful story to read while I was in Tanzania, but it made me reflect on my own life and the importance of living without regrets.

On my desk

Three destinations, plenty of stories

I’m working my way through a long list of stories from Italy, India and Tanzania.

It’s fascinating to see how the stories connect, and where they differ: walking in Italy and Tanzania, the colours of India and Tanzania, and, of course, the wildlife across all three.

I have five days of writing ahead of me, including three articles for the next issue of Globetrotter Magazine.

Through my lens - Impala

A small herd of impala watched us from the side of the road, deciding whether we were friend or foe. Once they decided we weren’t a threat, they carried on eating, although this one kept a wary eye on us.

Travel Wisdom

Leave room between journeys

As I get older, I realise that my brain, as well as my body, needs time to take in and appreciate the places I’ve visited.

I used to be able to bounce from one place to another - countryside, towns, planes - without giving myself much time to pause. Now I know I need a little breathing space between journeys: time to rest, look through my photographs and let the memories settle.

Next Stop...

London

As mentioned earlier, I’m heading down to England and World Travel Market. I’ll be catching up with friends and spending three days meeting people from across the travel industry, hearing about destinations and experiences that could inspire future stories.

Over to You

Where will your travel plans take you in 2027?

I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming about, whether you already have a trip booked or are just starting to make plans. Just hit reply and tell me about it.

Until next Sunday,

Larch x

Silver Sunday Sojourn #7 Hello from Scotland! This Sunday Sojourn has slipped into Monday. I’m home from Tanzania, and if I’m honest, I’m exhausted and feeling the post-trip blues. I had intended to write something reflective about the trip, my fitness and some changes I want to make. Those thoughts are still there, but I haven’t quite found the words for them yet. After days of moving from place to place, being outdoors and having something new to discover, I’m back with the washing,...

Silver Sunday Sojourn #6 Hello from Tanzania! Jambo from Tanzania! What a week it has been! When I arrived in Tanzania last weekend, I had some idea of what the next 12 days might hold. What I hadn’t anticipated was just how quickly those plans would change. There have been unexpected adventures, spectacular landscapes, wildlife encounters and a few rather long days on the road. I’ve travelled by helicopter, watched flamingos at Lake Natron and found myself in places I could scarcely have...

Silver Sunday Sojourn #5 Hello from Arusha Jambo from Tanzania! After trains, airports and an overnight flight, I’ve finally arrived — and this is my very first glimpse of Tanzania. This is my first time here, and I’m incredibly excited about what lies ahead. Over the next couple of weeks, there should be wildlife, incredible landscapes, new experiences and, no doubt, plenty of stories to bring home with me. For now, though, I’m going to take it all in. Tanzania, I’m ready for you. THIS...
