Jambo from Tanzania!
After trains, airports and an overnight flight, I’ve finally arrived — and this is my very first glimpse of Tanzania.
This is my first time here, and I’m incredibly excited about what lies ahead. Over the next couple of weeks, there should be wildlife, incredible landscapes, new experiences and, no doubt, plenty of stories to bring home with me.
For now, though, I’m going to take it all in. Tanzania, I’m ready for you.
THIS WEEK'S SOJOURN
One journey ends…
It feels slightly surreal to be in Tanzania when I only arrived home from Kerala a few days ago. There was barely time to unpack before the bags were packed again — cameras, binoculars and far too much tech included.
My photographs from India aren't even edited yet, and already another adventure is beginning.
I've swapped Kerala's tea plantations, beaches and backwaters for the landscapes and wildlife of Tanzania. Quite a change of scene!
From My Bookshelf: The Snows of Kilimanjaro
I failed miserably trying to read/listen during my trip to Kerala. I don't think I got past the first few sentences before falling asleep.
So I have put The God of Small Things and The Covenant of Water on the back burner and picked up a copy of Ernest Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a collection of short stories from around the world. And I actually have the physical book.
I’ve never read Hemingway before, so Tanzania seems like a rather appropriate place to start.
On my desk - India, India, India!
After putting all the photos into dated folders and weeding out the ones that I definitely don't need, it is time to have a serious look at them.
Alongside the photos, my notes app keeps track of ideas and snippets for the posts I’ll be writing over the next few weeks.
Through my lens
I love Street Art, particularly when it is well done. These two were part of "Amphibian Aesthetics", a mural on Ishara House on Burgher Street in Fort Kochi.
Ishara House is a contemporary art space in Kochi, and the mural was part of their inaugural show in December 2025.
Travel Wisdom
You don't always need time to process one journey before beginning another.
Sometimes travel comes thick and fast. I'm still processing Kerala — quite literally, judging by the number of photographs waiting to be edited — while Tanzania is already beginning around me.
Maybe that's okay. Some journeys make sense while you're there; others reveal themselves slowly once you're home.
Something that caught my eye
During KeralaMart, I had my left hand hennaed by the lovely Laylatul. I watched as she started creating the intricate design without any pattern to follow. She said that she feels the hand and the design comes to her.
In a way, it is like writing; I see or hear about something and from that I weave a post, story or article around it.
My henna has all but faded, but my memories of having it done and Kerala will stay with me for a long, long time.
New on The Silver Nomad - Discovering Genoa
Before India and Tanzania took over my travels, I spent some time exploring Genoa — and what a surprise it was.
Grand palaces, narrow medieval streets, incredible food, a fascinating maritime history and one of the largest historic centres in Europe: Genoa deserves far more attention than it gets.
My new guide brings together my favourite things to see and do, where to eat, what not to miss and plenty of practical tips to help you plan your own visit.

Come with me to Tanzania
For the next 12 days, I’ll be exploring Tanzania for the very first time - and I’d love you to come along with me.
There will be safaris, wildlife, incredible landscapes, walking and plenty of moments I probably can't predict just yet. I’ll be sharing daily Stories from Tanzania on Instagram, so you can follow the journey as it happens.
And, of course, I’ll be taking plenty of notes and photographs along the way, ready for lots of new Tanzania stories on The Silver Nomad when I return.
